Somewhere between what you have in life, and what you want, lies a gap. This is called ‘The Gap of Integrity’ and it exists for everyone. Sometimes the gap is small and we live with it, but sometimes it is big and the trick is to occasionally examine it incase there is something about it you have grown more aware of. My website www.suefirth1on1.com is for confidential support when individuals are stressed or unhappy. Inevitably when they come to see me we need to examine the gap; whether they feel this in a relationship, at work, or because they have less than they want by a certain age.

Sometimes the gap is a personal thing; some thing they need to come to terms with or are striving for, but have not yet reached. Occasionally, it is about self-esteem; could they manage what they want, but do not have enough faith in themselves to do it? Or, it could be professional; they are not doing what they want, or not achieving their full potential.

If it’s a personal reason they sometimes need to ask has something happened that they’re not happy about? Did they want the change, but now they can’t live with it, such as selling their business or saying they could handle a promotion, but finding it too much? Are they refusing to tackle something because it takes too much courage to do it such as leave a relationship?

Becoming aware of why you feel this gap is important, but what to do about it depends on the correct analysis of what the gap is about – a client once revealed they wanted to buy a piece of land to expand their business. They had every assurance they could need, every possible piece of advice, and the finances to do it, but still they hesitated. Fellow business men even told him it was “brilliant, the answer to all his problems!” What did he need to hear or do, in order to find the courage to do this? The answer – FAITH & BELIEF in himself, that if for ANY reason it didn’t work, it would all be ok. With that knowledge he was able to purchase it. He worked on his self-belief, realized that he was capable of great success, and bought the land.

Sahar Hashemi said in her book when she founded Coffee Republic, “Leap and the net will appear”. If you do not leap you will never know what could have been or how much happier you might have been. Her personal faith was strong; for the rest of us it’s a question of trying hard, and doing our best or at times, seeking help from people like me!
