This week The Executive Edge podcast hits Episode 199!!!
This week’s guest is Michael Forman, a Networking Expert, Author & Professional Speaker.
Originally a New Yorker but now based in Georgia, Michael’s delivered hundreds of presentations, helping organizations boost their profitability through improved networking practices.
On the show, Michael shares practical strategies for effective business networking, drawing from his extensive experience as a speaker and author of “Networking Unleashed: Mastering the Art of Professional Networking.”
Our conversation covers a lot of ground that’s drawn from Michael’s experience attending and participating in events. He shares insights into an approach that is easy to take onboard and designed to maximise your chances of making networking events benefit your business.
Before the event:
Research who’s attending and identify key people you’d like to meet. Set 2-3 specific goals for what you want to achieve. Prepare a clear, concise description of what you do and what makes your business unique. Bring plenty of business cards.
During the event:
Arrive early when people are still fresh and the room is less crowded. Start by finding someone standing alone – they’ll likely be grateful for the conversation. Ask open-ended questions about their business and actively listen. Focus on building genuine connections rather than just collecting business cards.
Some specific conversation techniques:
“What brings you to this event?” is a great opener. Follow up with “What’s been keeping you busy lately at work?” Listen for opportunities to add value or make introductions, and try to share relevant stories or experiences that demonstrate your expertise without overtly selling.
After meeting someone:
Write a key detail about your conversation on their business card. Move on politely after 5-10 minutes to meet others. If possible, try and connect with people you met on LinkedIn within 24 hours.
Michael also talks at length about his belief in sending a personalised follow-up mentioning something specific from your conversation.
